Built at the end of the 11th century and beginning of the 12th century by the Bishops of Girona, it is one of the most important examples of Catalan civic Romanesque architecture. The building was extended in the 14th century with the exterior wall and more rooms and in the 16th and 17th centuries the main façade was highly modified to give it a more sumptuous appearance.
The Castle is an Information Point and a popular culture center, offering a vast exhibition program throughout the year, as well as a variety of events like concerts and literary talks.
We invite you to enjoy its history thanks to the audiovisual presentation Land and blood: the feudal war in the Empordà region and, moreover, with the virtual visit by some characters from the Middle Age who will make you discover some secrets from the castle. There’s also the possibility to plan a guided visit.
Outside, bordered by the bailey, they take place many festive activities during the year. On Fridays, the day of the weekly market, the square gets very lively and full of market stalls that extend through the old center of La Bisbal d’Empordà.
