LOOK INTO THE ART AND CULTURE OF EMPORDÀ THROUGH ITS CHARACTERS

Antoni Vila Casas

THE LAST ENLIGHTENED BOURGEOIS

By Eudald Camps Photo Consuelo Bautista

A pharmacist, collector, cultural promoter, and founder and current president of the Foundation that bears his name, Antoni Vila Casas is one of the most prominent cultural figures in Catalonia. First, for his philanthropic work, but also for a keen vision of the social and political reality of a Catalonia that runs the risk of disappearing in spite of its dreams of becoming an enlightened state. His connection with the Empordà area has been strong since the early 1960s. In fact, the Foundation's first headquarters was the Palau Solterra in Torroella de Montgrí, followed by the Can Mario Sculpture Museum in Palafrugell. Barcelona came later. Vila Casas has kindly welcomed us to the offices of Espais Volart in Barcelona, where we are taking the opportunity to discuss the incredible donation he made to the struggling Miró Foundation.

Marina Garcés

PHILOSOPHY HAS THE POWER TO CURE US FROM FALSE PROBLEMS

By Ignasi Rifé Photo Andrea Ferrés

A COMMITTED LOCAL FISHERWOMAN

By Lola Puig Photo Javier Almar

Men typically crew offshore fishing boats. We may sometimes see a woman handling nets in the port, but rarely on board a ship. Originally from Colera, Pat Bros, @patbrosp, is one of the few fisherwomen plying her trade around the Cap de Creus. I had the pleasure of meeting a young, passionate woman whose eyes shine when she talks about the sea.

THEMED REPORTAGE

VERMOUTH, NOW AND ALWAYS

The classic vermouth is now the aperitif par of excellence. A tradition that has made a powerful come-back as the multi-dimentional phenomena of ‘the aperitif’... musical, poetical and literary — vermouth culture is reborn! Fancy a vermouth? With olives, ice, soda, in a cocktail… and, of course, along with some tapas, cockles, ‘patatas bravas’… In this realm, the scope of our imagination has no end!
