LOOK INTO THE ART AND CULTURE OF EMPORDÀ THROUGH ITS CHARACTERS

Perelada Winery

ONE FAMILY’S DREAM

The Peralada Group inaugurates the new winery to promote sustainability, experimentation, and innovation.

“We started to develop the idea of building a new winery in Peralada more than twenty years ago. In my mind I envisioned a project that would enhance the value of Peralada’s winemaking tradition while also taking an ambitious look towards the future. Today, and even though it might sound cliché, it’s a dream come true and I look back on the road it took to get here with great satisfaction” says Javier Suqué, president of Grup Peralada. The new Perelada winery is where an avantgarde winemaking concept meshes with a project grounded in architecture, sustainability, local involvement, and first-class wine tourism.

WINEMAKING. The new winery: a turning point that will showcase the wines of Peralada and the Empordà. With barely a year to go until its 100th anniversary, the new Perelada winery is giving fresh momentum to the Empordà, an emerging DO currently experiencing one of the most promising moments in its history.

THE LAND. A strong commitment to the land has made the dream of three generations come true. The new Perelada winery offers the public a legacy built on decades of dedication by the Suqué Mateu family, rooted in a terroir known for its singular heterogeneity and character — intimate, elegant, and genuine like its people — and influenced by its location between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean.

ARCHITECTURE. Nature and emotion, terroir and experience, the essence of the new architectural landscape by RCR Arquitectes, winner of the 2017 Pritzker Prize. The conceptual planning for the new winery goes back to the moment when the Suqué Mateu family decided to place their trust in RCR Arquitectes, a studio run by trio Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem, and Ramon Vilalta, and the purity of their architecture, based on respect for the pre-existing landscape and on prioritizing the emotionally and experiential facet of the resulting space.

SUSTAINABILITY. Seamless integration with the environment and high efficiency in a “green winery” unlike any other in Europe. The new Perelada Winery was recognized in 2021 as the first European winery certified as LEED® Gold, the world’s top sustainable building certification awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

WINE TOURISM. Perelada, from a comprehensive tourist spot to an internationally renowned must-see wine tourism destination. With a slow and silent descent into the depths of the earth, the tour is an introspective experience.
